Hope EVO 135mm ultra-short UK-machined alloy MTB cranks, mock-up

Hope calls their machined alloy EVO crankset the “Everything Crank”, because with arm lengths now as short as 135mm all the way up to 175s, and 4 modular spindle lengths, you really could put a set of these on almost any off-road bike. But wait, Hope EVO135mm… who needs crank arms that short?

Hope thinks a number of mountain bikers who loved their already short cranks, might just want to go even shorter!

Hope EVO 135mm, ultra-short UK-machined alloy MTB cranks

(Photos/Hope)

Almost 5 years ago, Hope stepped up their CNC-machined alloy crankset game with the EVO, making them 19% lighter AND stiffer than the previous generation with a more refined, easier-to-install design. Then, 2 years ago they machined the EVOs down even further to just 155mm long. The idea started with shorter cranks for eMTBs to improve clearance riding technical trails, but soon even some DH & Enduro racers were sold on the increase in rider stability, quicker acceleration, improved stiffness, and even lighter weight that came as a by-product.

Hope’s R&D team then said they had tested down to 140mm. But apparently, they didn’t stop there.

Now, the EVO cranks get a 135mm option too!

So why shorter again?

Hope EVO 135mm ultra-short UK-machined alloy MTB cranks, up close

Shorter 135mm EVO cranks get all of the same benefits that Hope hyped with the 155mm version, just taken to the next level. Improved stability, quicker spin-up, improved ground clearance, bigger effective gearing drive ratio, lighter weight, stiffer connection between pedal & bike.

[M]aybe you are a downhiller for whom the existing 155mm just isn’t short enough. Maybe you want a tougher option for your child’s bike.

Whatever your reason, a new Hope EVO 135mm crankarm simply means more options to better suit the individual needs or desires of more riders. And of course, you still get spindle lengths to fit all mountain bikes, and the full rainbow of Hope anodized aluminum colors to bring the matchy-matchy bling.

The team behind this little Belo bikes startup set out to build a more sustainable kids’ bike. Pairing fast-growing bamboo frame tubes with recycled plastic lugs, they’ve created a bike they say is as close as you can get to carbon-neutral, while still being 100% functional, cool to look at, and affordable for parents faced with kids that grow like weeds. For now, the Belo bike is being offered through a Kickstarter campaign in 14″ to 20″ wheelsize. But Belo hopes to deliver their sustainable, made-in-Germany kids bikes already by the middle of next summer!

“Let your little ones explore the world sustainably. Belo bikes for little eco-heroes!”

Belo’s goal was to create a better, more sustainable bike for kids. As parents themselves also faced with fast-growing kids, the Belo design team wanted to figure out how to build a high-quality bike that would get their children excited about riding. But at the same time, a bike that they could feel was more in line with the climate-positive benefits of actually riding bikes, instead of creating another disposable product.

Sustainable bamboo & recycled plastics

Belo bamboo bikes for kids, Belo is probably the world's most sustainable kids' bike, bamboo is the most eco-friendly bike frame material

Bamboo as a frame material first came to mind for its rapidly renewable character, minimal processing needs, red water consumption, and net negative CO2 impact. However, building conventional bamboo bikes is still very labor intensive and requires a lot of less-friendly epoxy work. So they spent the past 3 years developing a plug-and-play lug system that uses injection-molded recycled plastic to give the bikes structure, and requires much less harmful adhesive.

Plus, the white recycled plastic lugs were specifically infused with splashes of colorful throughout to create an eye-catching look to contrast the neutral tones of the bamboo frame elements.

The result is lightweight and fun to ride. Plus, Belo builds affordable frames thanks to the simple lugged construction, even factoring in production in Germany.

“By choosing our eco-friendly kids’ bike, you’re not only providing your child with a fun and healthy activity but also supporting a more sustainable planet.”

Tech details

Belo describes the bamboo they build their frames & rigid forks from as “light as aluminum, as strong as steel, and has a high resistance to compression, bending, and torsion“. Still, the fiber-reinforced, recycled plastic lugs are overbuilt to be extra strong for how kids use & abuse bikes, while still being lightweight. The bikes are also disc brake only and feature thru-axles to work with high-quality wheels.

Beyond the eco-friendly frames, Belo bikes feature solid kid-centric components. Comfy saddles, ergonomic bar shapes, child-specific levers for easy reach, and light affordable alloy components.

Belo bamboo bikes for kids, Belo is probably the world's most sustainable kids' bike. 3 sizes: 14", 16", or 20" wheels
  • available in 3 wheelsize-specific sizes (S-L) to fit kids from around 3- to 8-years-old
  • offered with 14″ and 16″ wheels as a singlespeed bike, or
  • the 20″ kids bike features a 1x 10-speed drivetrain
  • designed and manufactured in Dresden, Germany

Belo sustainable kids’ bikes – Kickstarter pricing, options & expected availability

Belo has just opened up a crowdfunding campaign for their sustainable bamboo and recycled plastic kids’ bikes on Kickstarter, and they still have quite a ways to go to meet their funding target. As an early backer, you could pre-order their 14″ bike for just 400€ or the 16″ bike for 500€. The 20″ 10-speed geared Belo kids’ bike is a bit more at 700€.

And there’s even an option for a limited founders addition where you can get a custom-colored Belo bike for 1000€, then in any of the wheel size options to fit your kid.

We’ve also heard they’re likely also working on a smaller balance bike version for even smaller kids, as well.

Belo’s Kickstarter runs through the middle of November. Assuming they hit their goal, Belo expects to ship their bikes out to early backers next summer, starting in May but officially by July 2025.

RMB Reaper Powerplay, boy jumping

It was just a matter of time, but younger trail riders now have the option of going electric thanks to Rocky Mountain Bikes. RMB says their new Reaper Powerplay is the first mid-motor, full-suspension eMTB specifically designed for kids.

An all-new Dyname S4 Mini motor and drive system is the heart of the Reaper Powerplay. Add to that dropper posts, hydraulic disc brakes, and some kid-sized components, and you’ve got a fully legit trail eMTB for your upcoming shredder. Furthermore, the smaller wheeled 24” model adapts to 26” wheels so it can grow with your grom.

Rocky Mountain Reaper Powerplay:

RMB Reaper Powerplay, angle, forest

The Reaper Powerplay features a FORM alloy frame with 130mms of rear travel driven by RMB’s mid-high pivot Smoothlink linkage. The frame is the same for the 24” and 26” wheeled models, but RMB has a few tricks up their sleeve to make it work with either wheel size.

The Reapers get RockShox Deluxe Select rear shocks, and Manitou JUNIT 34 forks. The 26” bike gets the JUNIT Expert model with 140mm travel, and the 24” bike gets the Comp model with 120mm (please note the Manitou forks are not shown in the photos).

RMB includes a version of their ‘Ride’ chip on the Reaper Powerplay, but in this case, it’s a Ride 2 flip-chip. Flipping the chip optimizes the frame for 24” or 26” wheels, so the 24” model can accept the larger wheels and fit your growing kid for longer.

RMB Reaper Powerplay, chainstay flip chip

To adapt the Reaper Powerplay for both wheel sizes, there is also a flip-chip in the chainstay. That does mean the 26” bike must be run in its Long setting, but the chainstay length can be adjusted on the 24” bike between its Short and Long positions. The frames are SRAM UDH compatible in Long mode only.

RMB Reaper Powerplay, adjustable headset

The third adaptation to fit both wheel sizes is an adjustable reach headset. The 24” Reaper Powerplay comes with -5mm headset cups installed, and the 26” version comes with +5mm cups. The longer reach is necessary to fit a 26” wheel up front so the reach adjustment isn’t there as a preference option, it just makes it possible to run both wheel sizes. The +5mm cups will be available to order so you can grow the 24” Reaper into a 26”.

Powertrain:

RMB Reaper Powerplay, Dyname S4 mini motor

Rocky Mountain went to Dyname to develop an all-new S4 Mini motor, which was made specifically for the Reaper Powerplay. The S4 Mini motor puts out 40Nm of torque and 300W peak power (250W nominal). A torque sensor ensures smooth power delivery.

Just like the adult Powerplay eMTBs, the Reaper Powerplays offer four assist levels – Eco, Trail, Trail+, and Ludicrous. They also include the ability to fine-tune the drive system with two rider profiles that offer adjustable boost and assistance levels.

One key feature for this grom-specific eMTB is the motor’s ‘kid mode’. This mode allows parents to limit the power output and the pedal assist’s top speed.

RMB Reaper Powerplay, mini remote

RMB’s Micro Remote handlebar-mounted controller allows for easy assist level changes, and access to the various info screens and configuration menus.

RMB Reaper Powerplay, jumbotron

The Jumbotron display screen in the Reaper Powerplay’s top tube shows your key ride stats, and includes the bike’s power button.

RMB Reaper Powerplay, girl pedalling

Power is supplied by an internal 240Wh battery. A 2A charger is included with the bike.

Geometry:

RMB Reaper Powerplay, geo chart

Some of the Reaper Powerplay’s key angles are very similar to adult bikes. They offer slack, up-to-date head tube angles; The 26” version is 64°, and the 24” bike is 65.7°. For efficient pedaling, seat tube angles are steep at 76.5° (26”) and 78.3° (24”).

Check out the above chart for the complete geometry of both models.

Build Notes:

RMB Reaper Powerplay, handlebars

Of course, Rocky Mountain made sure there were several kid-sized components on the Reaper Powerplays. First off, they come with 640mm wide RMB handlebars, with a 31.8mm clamp and 19mm diameter to accommodate junior-sized grips.

The Tektro hydraulic disc brakes feature short reach levers, and the bikes run 180mm rotors. RMB made sure the cranks were appropriate for young rippers, stocking 155mm arms on the 26” bike, and 140mm on the 24” model. The Dyname motor also allows Rocky Mountain to run two-piece cranks in the Reaper Powerplays, instead of the three-piece cranks some motors require.

The kids also get dropper posts! The 26” Reaper Powerplay offers an X-Fusion Manic 125mm dropper, and the 24” version runs a shorter 80mm version.

RMB Reaper Powerplay, CUES derailleur

A few components that are not kid-specific include a Shimano CUES 10-speed drivetrain with an 11-48t cassette, and WTB KOM Team rims wrapped with Maxxis Minion tires.

Model Lineup:

The Reaper Powerplay will be available in one model for each wheel size. They are only available in the colorways shown.

Giant Faith header

We have Faith in the youth to carry on the traditions, stewardship, and love of riding bikes. Giant Bicycles is renewing that Faith with an all-new, updated youth mountain bike. It’s a renewal, as the Giant Faith isn’t a new line, but it’s reimagined for a new generation of kids who want to have fun and shred.

The Giant Faith is specifically for developing young riders. The new range features purpose-built (youth-friendly) suspension, updated geometry, and components for smaller, lighter bodies.

A Return of Faith

The new Faith range is the first of its kind from Giant. It’s a collection of high-performance, full-suspension trail bikes that are on par with adult mountain bikes. The difference is that they are specifically dialed for youth use and dimensions—right down to the dropper seatpost.

Giant Faith headtube

The updated Giant Faith line starts with an aluminum frame with youth-specific geometry. The updated geometry expertly matches Giants’ all-new proprietary suspension setups, WheelSystems, and ergonomic touchpoints for smaller bodies.

The small bike packs a lot of cool tech, so let’s start at the base.

Giant Faith headtube welds

Giant ALUXX SL Frameset

Let’s start with the frame. The Faith’s canvas is a high-performance ALUXX SL aluminum frameset with youth-specific trail geometry. Weight is a big part of the picture here, and Giant wants to keep the Faith as slim and sleek as possible.

The frame boasts features like internal cable routing, dropper post compatibility, and a tapered headtube. Its construction looks very beefy and on par with some serious alloy trail bikes. The graphics are cool and understated, with a bit of skate style mixed in. Plus, there is lots of blank space for stickers, and if your kids are like mine… the more, the better.

Giant Faith hubset

TRA WheelSystems

Next up is the wheelset, and that, too, is youth-focused. Giant’s new youth-specific TRA WheelSystems borrows essential tech from the adult TRA WheelSystem, including nice modern wide rims, performance-level hubs, and extra thought put into the longevity of the build.

The rims are slightly overbuilt, with 5mm rim walls that hopefully will keep these kiddos dent-free for a while. The rear wheel boasts a 72-tooth freehub, better than some adult mountain bikes. The hubs are easily serviceable, like most Giant TRA hubs, and should last.

Giant Faith shock

Suspension Tuned for Young Riders

How a young rider sees the trail differs significantly from how a 6-foot-tall adult blasts through the single track. Their bikes should be able to tackle those unique demands and try not to hinder their riding growth. Giant feels the best way to overcome this is variable wheel sizes and suspension tuned specifically for kids.

The Giant Faith uses the Giant FlexPoint rear suspension system with a Crest FloTrac Lite shock. New Crest Lite suspension forks with FloTune Lite dampers help kids tackle technical terrain with more confidence and control.

Giant Faith saddle

Two Distinct Giant Faith Models

The new Giant Faith range includes two models. The Giant Faith features a new Giant TRA WheelSystem with a 27.5-inch front wheel and 26-inch rear. The wheels borrow vital features and technologies from race-proven adult TRA WheelSystems, including WideGuard technology, to improve rim strength and reduce the risk of flats. The smaller Faith 24 has 24-inch TRA wheels front and rear for lighter weight and easier handling.

All Faith models have youth-specific cranks, brake levers, and new Contact Switch AT Lite dropper seat posts. The Contact Switch AT Lite dropper has a lighter action and requires less force/weight to initiate the drop, making it much easier for kids to use. The grips and levers are also youth-focused, with a smaller diameter grip and easier-to-access levers.

Super Active FlexPoint Rear Suspension

Both Faith models feature FlexPoint rear suspension systems with a Crest FloTrac Lite shock. This linkage-driven, single-pivot system creates consistent damping and spring performance throughout the travel. Like larger Giant bikes, it isolates the rear shock to provide small bump sensitivity through the entire wheel path.

Kids may or may not notice all the subtle nuances of the tech, but they can sure feel if it’s smooth. My son describes it as having a “magic carpet feel.” The above result is a smooth, active feel through the shock stroke with no harsh bottom-outs.

Giant Faith fork lowers

Crest FloTrac Lite-Shock

The Crest FloTrac Lite-Shock is designed and built in-house to complement Giant’s suspension platform kinematics for lightweight riders. It receives custom tuning for less force input and lightweight action.

Giant Faith fork top

Paired with Giants Triple Flow Path technology that stabilizes the shock’s motion when active, Crest FloTrac Lite gives smaller riders increased traction and control while descending or climbing. The Crest TR Elite Lite and Crest SL FloTune Lite forks are custom-tuned for light riders. The design boasts low-friction action and the latest Giant FloTune Lite damper.

Giant Faith rear tire clearance

In addition, all Faith models feature Unified Suspension Setup, a guide displayed on the forks indicating optimal air pressure, and damper setting recommendations for both the rear shock and the fork based on rider weight.

Giant Faith chain guard

135mm or 130mm of Real Travel

The Faith series has 135mm of rear Travel, with a 140mm Crest SL FloTune Lite fork, which is explicitly tuned for riders weighing under 62kg. The Faith 24 series has 130mm of rear Travel and is paired with a 140mm Crest TR Elite Lite Fork, which is also explicitly tuned for riders weighing under 46kg.

Giant Faith crankset

Spec’d to Climb and Descend

Going down the hills is fun, but going up is OK, too, if you have the correct gears. Either Faith model comes with Microshift Advent X G-Series-10-speed, an 11×48 cassette paired with a 30T front chain ring. The crankset is a short 155mm (or 140mm on the 24″ model), hoping to limit pedal strikes and foster a balance of cadence and power.

There is no front derailleur, but there is a very beefy Giant chain guide. Paired with the Advent X G-Series derailleur equals zero dropped chains.

Tire-wise, the Faith gets serious, arriving with Maxxis Minion DHR II, 2.4, 60 TPI TLR. Paired with the Tektro hydraulic brakes with 180/160mm rotors, this bike should able to take on mountains!

The team behind Prevelo (purveyors of excellent kids’ bikes) takes a massive step into the adult bike category with the EagleBear Black. The EagleBear bike company is completely new, and shares members that made the Prevelo bikes team so successful.

EagleBear crew

The team wants parents and riders looking for an affordable “return to cycling” bike to feel at home with the EagleBear family.

The EagleBear head badge is pretty sweet IMO. Image: Jordan Villella

Why a new brand? If you’re encouraging your children to ride, you should have a dependable machine yourself. Don’t think you’re pulling out the rusty 10-speed (the one you haven’t tuned since high school) either. Chances are it needs more work than it’s worth, and if you’re stopping every minute to fix something, you’re not going to have a productive outing with family or friends (we’ve all been there).

The EagleBear bike line aims to equip riders with everything they need for a great day exploring the trails or gaining fitness. The complete bike retails $1,300 and has some extra add-ons parents will dig into.

Whats EagleBear?

Besides an awesome band name, EagleBear is the brainchild of the crew at Prevelo Bikes. There is a gap in the market for parents rejoining the bike world. Especially for affordable/dependable machines, and double for ones that can take many kid-centric accessories.

EagleBear looks to fill that gap with affordable, long lasting bikes that can be a gateway to cycling.

Designed for Fun and Utility

The EagleBear Black is designed to be easy and fun to ride. The specs are thoughtful, much like those of the Prevelo bike line. EagleBear’s ethos is to give the customer the most bang for their buck without unwanted extras that will never be noticed.

EagleBear black fork

The frame is a full alloy with a kickstand mount (excellent) and a full carbon fork. The EagelBear Black rolls on 700c wheels and can fit a 700c x 45mm tire if needed.

The team explained that riders can purchase an optional 27.5 x 2.2” wheel set at check out as an “off-road” option.

EagleBear Black Geo

The geometry is for all-day mixed-surface and adventure riding, but it’s more neutral than anything. Don’t look for snappy responsiveness like a road race bike; look for predictability and comfort.

Sizes: Small, Medium, Large and Extra Large

So Much Room for Activities

I think of the Black as a transformer-style bike. It can do a lot of things, and with the right assortment of accessories, it’s unstoppable. For family riding and adventuring, the Black is easy to outfit with a front rack that can carry luggage, gear, or a smaller bike.

EagleBear black kids stuff

Add a Mac Ride child seat, and a small rider can hop aboard if they tire of pedaling independently. The frame is adaptable to use different-style racks, trailers, and kid seats.

“The world is full of many different types of bikes, and the list of variations seems to be growing continuously,” said EagleBear co-founder Jim Huth. “With the Black, we wanted to build something that riders can use daily for every purpose.”

What’s the Spec?

EagleBear black

The Black has a Shimano Deore 12-speed drivetrain, tubeless-ready Kenda tires, and Shimano flat-mount hydraulic brakes.

If riders are feeling the gnarly side of life, the 27.5 x 2.2” wheelset has optional add-ons. These include a tubeless setup kit, alloy front rack, 80mm riser bar, colored lock-on grips, and bottle cages.

When can I get a EagleBear Black?

The new EagleBear Blakc bike will be available for pre-order at EagleBear.com starting April 17th. Its estimated delivery date is mid-July 2024. Look for additional EagleBear models in the future.

News out of Waterloo, Wisconsin, Trek Bicycles has launched a new line of bikes, just for the kids. Trek’s new Wahoo Path line of kids’ bikes is packed with lightweight, premium hybrid bikes that ride and feel like adult bikes.

The new line of bikes sports a light and durable Alpha Aluminum frame, 1×8 drivetrain, adult-style trigger shifters, and confidence-inspiring rim brakes. In addition, the Wahoo Path comes in 20″ (not available in the U.S.), 24″, and 26″ wheel sizes, to better accommodate a wider range of kids.

Trek Wahoo Path Highlights

Lightweight, kid-friendly frame
The Wahoo Path’s lightweight Alpha Aluminum frame and fork make it easy for the lil’ ones to ride. They’ll have no issues lifting and maneuvering the bike while out exploring their neighborhood on their mini-adventures. Easy maneuverability means keeping things fast and fun.

Excellent Stopping Power
Stop on a dime with the familiar, lightweight, and powerful “V” brake, rim brakes. Giving the kiddos a great set of brakes keeps them safe and in control. Resulting in riding with confidence, hopefully creating a lifelong bicycle rider.

Trek Bicycles Wahoo Path microSHIFT drivetrain

A Great Set o’ Gears
The microSHIFT Acolyte is a no-joke, kid-specific 1×8 drivetrain with an 11-38t cassette for excellent range. Kid-friendly trigger shifter that’s easy to reach and has a lighter action. Again, setting the lil’ ones up for success, and preparing them for the transition to adult bikes.

Keeping ’em Confident and Comfortable

The more upright riding position of the Wahoo Path hybrid-style geometry keeps the kids comfortable. The upright riding position allows more control and a better line of sight, for increased confidence. Riding until the street lights come on never looked so good.

Kids these days… spoiled rotten I tell you! Many well-established bike companies now offer appropriately sized (and tuned) MTBs for young riders, including Devinci Cycles and their new Ewoc FS trail bike.

The Ewoc FS is a full-suspension trail bike designed specifically for young shredders. It comes on 24” wheels, but the frame and fork are compatible with 26” wheels so the bike can grow with its rider. Aimed at groms approximately 9-12 years old and/or 4’4”- 4’11” tall, the Ewoc FS features Devinci’s Split Pivot suspension linkage with 125mms of rear travel.

Frame Features:

Devinci Ewoc FS, side, studio

The Ewoc FS frame is made in Canada from 6061 T6 aluminum. Knowing how kids can be rough on their stuff, Devinci gave it a durable powder coat paint job.

To keep maintenance easy, Devinci gave the Ewoc FS external cable routing. The frame was designed to offer a very low standover height and provides clearance for tires up to 2.4” wide (with 24” or 26” wheels).

Devinci Ewoc FS, linkage

The Ewoc’s suspension kinematics were specifically tuned for lightweight riders, so the linkage remains highly active even with low shock pressures. Devinci even builds the Ewoc frame with Enduro double-lip sealed bearings to ensure long-lasting, smooth suspension movement.

Devinci Ewoc FS, dropper post

The Ewoc FS frame fits 31.6mm seat posts, and the stock dropper post has 100mm travel. The frame runs a Boost 148mm rear axle, and can fit a 28t or 30t chainring.

A threaded BB makes crank maintenance simple, and a chainstay protector and lower down tube guard provide protection against rock strikes and chain slap.

Geometry:

Devinci gave the Ewoc FS modern geometry so young riders can tackle the trails with confidence. The head tube angle of 64.5° and 76° seat tube angle are right in line with today’s adult bikes. See the chart below for all the numbers.

Devinci Ewoc FS, geometry

Component Highlights:

Devinci Ewoc FS, suspension

Devinci went with a suspension package from X-Fusion for the Ewoc FS, with a 02PRO RL rear shock and a 140mm Velvet RL fork. The air-sprung fork offers a lockout and rebound adjustment.

Devinci Ewoc FS, brake lever

Key kid-specific touches on the build include 155mm SRAM SX Eagle cranks and Promax short-reach brake levers. Promax’s 2-piston calipers grab 180mm front and rear rotors. Another youth-sized component is the 680mm wide V2 Pro handlebar.

Devinci Ewoc FS, 12 speed cassette

There’s nothing kiddie about the Ewoc FS’s 12-speed SRAM SX Eagle drivetrain, featuring a wide range 11-50t cassette. Young rippers also get the benefit of a Trans-X 100mm dropper post.

The Ewoc’s V2 Comp 24” rims have a 27mm inner width to spread out the Kenda AMRAK 24×2.4” tires, and a set of Wellgo pedals are included so this bike is shred-ready.

Build Spec:

The Ewoc FS will be offered with one build spec – the Ewoc FS SX 12S.

The Ewoc FS comes in Gloss/Green Aston, and Devinci covers the frames with a lifetime warranty. MSRP is $2099.

Commencal Meta HT XS mini-mullet 27.5/26

One of Commencal’s next generation of young mountain bike riders has a new mountain bike to shred with this Meta HT XS mullet all-mountain hardtail. But it’s a different kind of mullet bridging the gap between kid’s and adult mountain bikes with a 26″ rear wheel paired to a 27.5″ and a whopping 150mm of travel up front…

Commencal Meta HT XS 27.5/26″ mullet enduro MTB hardtail

Commencal’s Meta HT XS is the latest in their family of burly trail hardtails developed to bring big mountain biking fun to smaller riders. They describe it with the ethos of “Ride XS, Dream XL.”

That rider in the video and photos is the current under-15 European DH champ and last year’s cadet winner of the French Downhill Cup – Ava Chaumet-Lagrange. She now races downhill on the smallest regular mullet Supreme DH bike. But she’s honing in her all-rounder trail riding skills on this new mini-mullet 27.5 up front x 26″ out back Commencal Meta HT XS hardtail.

Tech details

2024 Commencal Meta HT XS mini-mullet enduro all-mountain bike hardtail, angled detail

The Commencal Meta HT XS is a no-nonsense triple-butted 6061 alloy all-mountain to enduro hardtail. It’s “specifically designed for teenagers and riders with smaller builds.” With a 150mm travel 35mm-stanchion fork, a slack 64° head angle, and a steep-ish 73° seattube with a dropper, it is truly meant to smash down technical trails. At a claimed total weight of 14kg/30.9lb, it’s going to take some work to pedal it back up the bigger hills. But it has the full Eagle gearing range and a fork lockout, so let’s just say the long uphills will help build character and ultimately endurance.

The Boost-spaced hardtail features old-school internal cable routing, a BSA threaded bottom bracket, a 31.6mm dropper seatpost, and 2.5″ max tire clearance.

Who’s a Meta HT XS for anyway?

Commencal Meta HT XS mini-mullet 27.5/26" enduro all-mountain bike hardtail, riding rock slab

Let’s start out with the fact that both of my kids rode a Commencal Meta HT 24. With, you guessed it, 24″ wheels. It’s been a great bike, built up with a proper Manitou J-Unit fork & cockpit designed to perform well for kids. Plus, 2.4″ Vee tires, a proper SRAM 1x drivetrain, hydraulic disc brakes, and a dropper post. Commencal does a solid job of building a reasonably priced kid’s bike with proper components that’s not too heavy, and is built to last. It’s a great starter mountain bike for a serious kid.

Now with the addition of the XS, there are really options for all ages and all sizes. Start with the Meta HT 20 from around 5 years old, to the 24 to the JR with 26″ wheels. And now the mini-mullet Commencal Meta XT XS for riders from say 11/12 years & up from about 148-160cm tall.

The Commencal Meta HT XS is one-size-only. But of course other wheel sizes for other sized riders. Now 20″, 24″ or 26″ for smaller riders. 27.5/29″ mullet or full 29er for larger riders.

2024 Commencal Meta HT XS mini-mullet enduro all-mountain bike hardtail, SRAM SX Eagle drivetrain

The XS comes in just one single build. That’s spec’d with a 150mm RockShox Recon Gold RL fork, a SRAM SX Eagle drivetrain with 165mm cranks, and SRAM Level brakes – 2-piston but 200mm rotor up front & 180mm out back to bring lighter riders to a quick stop. Wheels are 26.5mm internal Spank Spoon 32 rims (officially not tubeless, unfortunately) on Formula hubs & wrapped with 2.4″ Maxxis DHR II EXO tires front & rear. The rest of the components are all solid but not-too-heavy alloy house-brand Ride Alpha kit. Plus a KS-Rage I 100mm dropper post.//

Commencal Meta HT XS mini-mullet 27.5/26" enduro all-mountain bike hardtail, blasting berms

Officially, the Meta HT XS retails for around 2100€. But it’s in stock direct from Commencal for 1/3 less than that at 1488€.

Kona buy one get one free sale Process MTB

It appears that 2023 is the year of the bike BOGO. That’s buy-one-get-one-free, a term that’s normally not associated with the purchase of a complete bicycle. Then again, this hasn’t been a normal year for sales. As a result of many bike industry brands carrying far too much inventory into the new year, we’re seeing Black Friday deals that started well before Black Friday transition into fire sales as bike brands try to move aging products.

Buy One Get One Free Mountain Bikes?

This isn’t the first BOGO bike deal we’ve seen this year, but in terms of bicycle value, the appropriately named Kona N+1 sale is the craziest yet. Although, maybe this should be named the N+2 sale where N is the number of bikes you currently have since buying a new Kona Process means you’re getting two.

From now until December 31st, 2023, Kona is offering a buy-one-get-one-free deal on any in-stock Kona Process full-suspension mountain bike. These are killer bikes that have always impressed us with their well-rounded capabilities, style, and legendary North Shore durability.

What Kona Bikes Are On Sale?

The Kona Bike sale is limited to in-stock Process full-suspension models, but there is still a lot to choose from. At the most basic level, you’ll need to choose between the aluminum process models and the higher-end carbon versions. But from there, you have the choice of travel and wheel size – there’s even the Process X DH and a kid’s Process 24 to consider!

That could make this a perfect chance to get yourself a new mountain bike while getting a legit full-suspension mountain bike for your child, for free. Or, team up with one of your riding buddies and split the cost. Or just get two new bikes for yourself!
