Shimano’s latest film project, Food I Think About When I Think About Cycling, features celebrity chef Chris Cosentino. In the film, Chris talks of the Bay Area’s melding of food and bicycles. The Bay Area provides the perfect climate and a long growing season, which provide the chef with limitless possibilities.

Using inspiration that comes to him while riding the hundreds of miles of roads and trails north of San Francisco in the Marin headlands, chef Chris finds himself experimenting with new, exciting, and sometimes strange ingredients daily.

Cycling is fundamental to Chris’ creative process. And it’s intertwined with his approach to cooking. “Whether he’s looping through Chinatown, brushing past wild fennel on Mount Tamalpais singletrack, or getting lost in the grassy hills above Point Reyes, Chris soaks it all in, registers what’s in season, and plugs this knowledge in back in the kitchen, creating mouth-watering dishes that reflect the season and Chris’ vibrant sense of living“.

If a rider on a bike rides backward on a train moving forward, will they stay in the same spot? In the most recent Red Bull clip worthy of an episode of Mythbusters, Dawid Godziek proves the answer is yes. Mostly.

Calling it a world-first, Godziek’s feat was a collaboration with Prada Linea Rossa, supported by Grupa Azoty Koltar and PKP Polish State Railways. All that support was necessary because the goal was to ride a slopestyle course built on top of 10 train carriages moving at a speed of 23km/h. The course featured 8 jumps, a roller, and a stair drop, which Godziek conquered on his custom Specialized bike equipped with Continental tires.

Oh, and Godziek also planned to pull off a world-first flat drop backflip down a set of stairs. No big deal.

“At first, I practised riding on the track while the train was parked. Once I felt confident, we set the train in motion and gradually increased the speed. 23 kilometres per hour was the right moving speed to match my riding speed to create the feeling of riding in one position. That impression of a frozen background is very strange. Navigating this course smoothly was much more challenging than it looked,” said Godziek.

Overcoming the wind, the disorienting movement and speed of the train, and the trick difficulty itself, Godziek managed to pull off a visual spectacle that is unlike anything we’ve seen.

Pinarello debuts the first of ‘Fausto Talks’ – a 6-part web documentary series telling the stories behind several of the brand’s most iconic bikes. And they start with the wild and revolutionary aerodynamic carbon Pinarello Espada that Miguel Induráin rode to an Hour Record thirty years ago this week, on the velodrome in Bordeaux, France. It was a bike unlike anything that came before it. It laid the foundation for both the carbon fiber construction and aero focus that dominates almost all modern performance bikes these days, across all disciplines.

The tale of the Pinarello Espada’s development quickly drew me in, and can’t wait to see what comes next…

‘Fausto Talks’ Documentary Series on iconic Pinarello bikes

The Espada story is a compelling and emotional one. Sit back and let Pinarello’s President and son of the bikemaker’s founder Fausto Pinarello tell how the bike came to be. It was a watershed moment for the brand. The then 33-year-old Fausto who had shifted from his role in finishing Pinarello bikes to a leadership role securing pro sponsorships, just lured Induráin’s Banesto team back onto Pinarello bikes.

The Espada developed so quickly as the Pinarello team ran with the idea to create a truly innovative bike – bringing in outside experts for their first wind tunnel testing, complete aero-led design, and first-ever carbon frame. From the first welded aluminum prototype in the wind tunnel to a rideable plaster mockup to the final carbon bike that Induráin would ride 53.040km (32.958 mi) in one hour.

What’s next?

Still, the story of Induráin’s wild Pinarello Espada Hour Record bike is only the 1st of 6 that will complete the ‘Fausto Talks’ series. Madrone Cycles has been busy since we first caught up with them earlier this year at Sea Otter. Madrone is still offering SRAM AXS rebuild kits, but it’s their own prototype rear derailleur that has improved substantially since we last saw it. Now on the Gen 2 prototype, the derailleur is modular to allow it to work with 10, 11, 12, or 13-speed cassettes, different shifters, and even a UDH Direct-Mount or standard derailleur hanger mount.
