You Think it Already Exists, But it Doesn’t: Introducing the First Chris King Seatpost Collar

I don’t know about you guys, but Chis King’s newly released Seatpost Collar came as a surprise to me. I seriously thought that Chris King Precision Components already offered a seat collar. But, we all must have imagined it since this is their first. The new seat collar is a welcome addition that would sit pretty well between your Chis King Headset, Hubs, and Bottom Bracket.

The new Seatpost Collar looks to take a design nod from the iconic Chris King headset cups. As you’d expect, these new collars are precision-machined from aluminum. They are finished with the Chris King wood mark.

And, if you look closely, there is a lil’ “Chris King Buzz Bee” etched right there on the barrel nut.

The barrel nut allows for the collar to keep optimal thread alignment while tightening the collar down. It also allows for even clamping force.

The Chris King Seatpost Collar

Chris King Seatpost Collar weight

I received my Chris King Seatpost Collar in Matte Turquoise in the 34.9 size. And It’s as beautiful as you’d expect any product from Chris King to be. It weighed in at a respectable 32 grams with stainless steel hardware. Not the lightest, but it’s also pleasantly robust in its construction. So, there is a give and take here.

It has a pronounced lip that keeps it sitting pretty on the top of your seat tube, like most seat collars. Mine looks great on the Masi Incanto Ti, where I have a matching Chris King headset installed.

My Thoughts

Go get one. I think the Chis King Seatpost Collar is not only something most of us thought already existed but, something you should probably own. It’s a high-quality, reasonably priced, USA-made product that will last the life of your bicycle and likely longer. It doesn’t get more simple and elegant.

thank you for weighing that, but pretty sure anyone here doesn’t care about the weight—those things are beuuuuutiful. Funny thing is, my headset they will match on my single speed is now 30 years old–and cost the same as these collars do now.

Weighs nearly 3x my current clamp. I could probably find a bike to put it on.

These are long overdue. Matchy headset, BB and seat collar really pulls together a build. Kudos, CK!

It’s cool that they’re matched to the King colorways, but honestly they look a lot like Salsa collars.

VERY INTERESTING

Yeah, but then you still have a Salsa collar that doesn’t match with a CK headset.

I don’t know if it is intentional, but the Salsa stuff is pretty close. I have a CK bottom bracket and headset in mange. The Salsa seat collar and quick release skewers that I have in orange are look indistinguishable.

How do y’all feel about this vs Thomson? I guess it all depends on what you want to match

I’ve seen 4 or 5 Thomson collars snap. I wouldn’t run one.

Wow, that’s interesting. I always thought Thomson were the gold standard in seat posts and seat post collars. Were they overtightened?

There is a lot of fraudulent Thomson stuff on the market. I’ve cracked a stem, but I bought it on ebay or at a swap, and Isuspect it might have been a fake.

I had a legit stem on my cx bike that cracked in storage during the off season. They did warranty it though and I still have that stem.

They make some of the least comfortable seat posts, and some of the least reliable seatpost clamps. Would not recommend.

I have not had good experience with Thomson collars. Not enough force to keep post from slipping and I’m only 145lbs.

Thomson makes some of the worst seatpost collars in existence, so I would imagine these are better.

Softened shape contrasts nicely with Hope’s more angular example, which I have in blue. The Chris King gives a smoother transition between the seatpost and seat stay.

I feel like Kramer in that episode of Seinfeld where he went to Calvin Klein to pitch the idea about a cologne that smells like the beach. They say they’re not interested and then Kramer discovers (smells) it on one of Jerry’s girlfriends that’s a model for Calvin Klein.

I sent them an email at the end of May asking about one to match the Matte Turquoise headset and BB on my bike and they said that I might be able to find someplace that does custom anodizing…wish they would have given me a heads up so I could’ve gotten one in the 34.9 size before they sold out. Looks like they’re going to be quite popular.

No, I did not think these already existed. Did anybody (besides Ron)?

Why didn’t you make a quick release version? I’ve had king hubs and headsets from way back awesome components!
My wolftooth QR are pretty f____n sweet though.

Perhaps an important factor that this review is missing is the height of the collar. According to the CK website, “…Clamp Height to Inner Lip 14.35mm”. That’s slightly taller than the Thomson clamp at 12.7mm. Folks with steel or titanium frames may appreciate that extra clamping area to prevent seatpost slip. Some dropper posts are sensitive to over-torqued clamps. For that, I could see justifying the premium price of this bling seatpost collar.

What tires are on that bike in this review?

Turning $1.50 of aluminium, $0.2 of stainless, a bolt and 10 mins of machine time into $50.00 – only Chris King could do it and people jump to buy them.

Looks a lot (exactly) like Thomson, and weighs about the same. Tho, I’m a total sucker and recently bought CK purple headset and bb, but did a wolf tooth collar… Slightly different purple, but also just 18 grams with the ti bolt.

All these comments singing blind praise to the kind and slagging off other brands, yet King components have the rare claim to fame of being the only brand to nearly kill me thanks to a dodgy, slipping freewheel mechanism in their hub. And before people claim it must have been fake it wasn’t, and kind did SFA to warranty it. Won’t touch them again

King used to be cool… Single speed hubs, Ti cassette lock rings, Ti crown races, 1 inch threaded headsets, hub drive shells across the product line using roller bearings that never creek. Nice try King, but seat collars are some low hanging fruit.
