Today is a big day for Santa Barbara’s Stinner Frameworks. Not only have they announced a new Carrizo All-Road bike, but with it, they’re introducing a complete range of approachable, made-in-the-USA bikes. Introducing the Stinner Select Program. With this new program, the Carrizo is ready to ship within days, not weeks or months.

California-based Stinner Frameworks has been building steel and titanium bicycles for over a decade, becoming a staple in the handmade frame-building world. Their continued growth and popularity put the brand in a unique and exciting position.

Stinner Frameworks Carrizo All-Road Bike golden hour

The “Select” program is designed to offer customers the best Stinner has to offer while “eliminating the wait time and potential confusion that’s often associated with a custom bike”. The dedicated, in-house production and manufacturing line will allow Stinner’s full custom side to continue to flourish, with “Select” bikes remaining in stock all year long.

The new Carrizo All-Road is built in the same facility, by the same team that builds Stinner’s famous custom offerings. The Carrizo will be available online and at select Stinner dealers worldwide.

The Stinner Carrizo “Select”

This new Carrizo all-road bike is handcrafted, powder-coated, and assembled in Stinner’s Santa Barbara facility. The frame uses lightweight Columbus Zona Steel tubes.

Stinner Frameworks Carrizo All-Road Bike drivetrain

The complete Carrizo will sport a SRAM Apex AXS 12-speed drivetrain. The frame will be able to run 40mm tires, making it comfortable on paved, not-so-paved, and dirt roads.

Braze-ons for fenders and three water bottles make the Carrizo a tough cookie that’s ready for year-round adventuring. The complete will also have a full Easton cockpit and DT Swiss wheels.

German-made bicycle company Sour Bikes has a new all-road bicycle model. It’s been in the works for a long time. After four years in the “planning hopper”, taking their time to “do it right, and do it our way”, the new Sour Space Cake is finally here.

(Photos / Sour Bikes)

Sour felt that there was a significant gap in their bike offerings. A road-plus bike was the thing to fill the gap. They set out to design something fast and efficient, but something that could “get weird when the road turns rough”.

Space Cake to Tackle the “Paved” Roads

Sour bikes Space Cake All-Road Bike cockpit

After countless prototypes and test rides, the Space Cake is here and Sour says it’s the most “road” bike they’ve ever made. The geo is tuned for long road days and adds durability. The tubing and frame parts are designed to be as light and efficient as possible.

Gone are the road bikes of yesterday. No more ultra-skinny, high-pressure tires on a “one-trick-pony”, road bike. This all-road bike is built for when the paved road fades into a gravel road and you want to take the long way home.

Sour bikes Space Cake All-Road Bike carbon fork

Sour says the Space Cake is light, responsive, and built for speed. Like all of the Sour bike models, the Space Cake comes with its signature, custom powder coating. Choose from bold, classy, or a little off-beat.

Mountain biking is at the core of Sour Bikes’ DNA, but they say all-road and gravel are at the heart of Sour’s off-MTB-season. As such, a bike like the Space Cake can be the perfect off-season tool even if you prefer knobby tires and full suspension.

Berlin-based bike maker Standert updated their popular Pfadfinder steel endurance all-road bike with some click 3D-printed dropouts and full cable integration. But they also took the all-road overhaul as an opportunity to bring production back to Europe. So Standert now makes the Pfadfinder entirely in the Czech Republic. Plus, the versatile endurance all-rounder

Standert actually updated Pfadfinder over the summer, but now that winter knocks on our doorstep and with the thought of off-season training in mind, it’s hard not to see the value of a high-performance steel endurance road bike built for racking up base miles. Plus, Standert just added a new LTD V limited edition paint job to give the steel all-road bike more classic two-color look.

“Built for endurance, the Pfadfinder is designed to meet the demands of the most discerning cyclist. A destination, total exhaustion, inner peace, the Pfadfinder will get you there, offering a seamless blend of speed, comfort, and durability. The Pfadfinder geometry is the perfect balance between race and comfort, helping to maintain the bike’s versatility and not limit it to only one discipline. The frame can also accommodate up to 38mm tyres, giving riders peace of mind when they venture off the beaten track and across bone-rattling surfaces, not having to think about the terrain.”

What’s new?

Standert Pfadfinder integrated steel endurance all-road bike, EU-made, front end

Integrated cable routing through the headset is the most obvious update to the hard-working Standert Pfadfinder vs. the original, giving the bike even simpler lines with no visible external cables. Or also cleaner mounting of lights or bikepacking bags if you plan of going ultra-distance with a new steel endurance all-road bike.

Standert Pfadfinder integrated steel endurance all-road bike, raw frames in production

But probably bigger news in our book is Standert’s move to European manufacturing. Previously made in Taiwan, Standert manufactures the new Pfadfinder entirely in Europe with an experienced framebuilder based in the Czech Republic. They weld the front triangles of the light Columbus Spirit steel frames by hand. Then, braze in the rear end with all-new custom 3D-printed stainless steel Standert thru-axle dropouts that bring UDH compatibility and flexible internal routing for all types of drivetrains.

The Pfadfinder is the first of Standert’s bikes to be made by hand in the Czech Republic. But it also signals a major shift for their steel production and a greater focus on improved sustainability, “shortening supply chains, and working in accordance with EU environmental regulations”. Standert’s aluminum & Scandium bikes are already made in Italy.

“We are incredibly proud to introduce the newly updated Pfadfinder. We took what was great about the Pfadfinder and meticulously improved every little detail to create a bike that excels in performance, comfort and reliability. By relocating our manufacturing to Europe, we ensure that the Pfadfinder not only meets, but exceeds, the highest standards of quality and sustainability. If you don’t want to have a specific road bike or a specific gravel bike, the Pfadfinder is the perfect bike for you.“
– Standert founder, Max Von Senger

Northwave Revolution revamped carbon-soled performance road bike shoes

Northwave has a new pair of carbon-soled road bike shoes called Revolution, high-performance at a mid-tier price. And while there’s really nothing radically unique about them, the completely revamped shoes do look solid, delivering much of the performance of Northwave’s top-level pro road shoes, just with added comfort and the option for a wide fit to appeal to a broader group of recreational road riders.

Northwave says not to call it “mid-range” but that’s exactly what the Revolution road shoes are. They’ve been around for years a step below Northwave’s Extreme family. But now, just like last fall’s top-tier Veloce Extreme road shoe upgrade, the more affordable Revolutions are better than ever, too.

What’s new? What’s not new!

2025 Northwave Revolution revamped carbon-soled performance road bike shoes, now in wide fit sizes too, top view

The revamped Northwave Revolution is pretty much all-new. The most obvious change on the outside is the new multi-layer laminated polyurethane synthetic upper. It now gets more advanced reinforcement around the instep & heel for improved support, plus laser-perforated holes on both sides & over the toebox for good ventilation. Plus, there’s a new laminated mesh tongue construction to also help keep your feet cool.

2025 Northwave Revolution revamped carbon-soled performance road bike shoes, 13/15 stiffness Morph Carbon composite sole

The next big shift is underneath. The new Northwave Revolution now features a stiffer 13/15 full injection-molded carbon composite sole for efficient but comfortable pedaling. The new Morph Carbon sole now features thru-venting under the cleat, a rubber toe block for walkability & bump protection, and a replaceable rubber heel tread block.

It still incorporates Powershape arch support, compatibility with traditional 3-bolt road cleats, and direct mounting of low-stack Wahoo/Speedplay pedals with the optional Northwave adapter plate.

And finally, a new Wide Fit option, too. More than just making them wider, Northwave reshaped the Revolution Wide shoes with different toe, metatarsal & instep dimensions optimized around still providing a high performance for cyclists that need more volume.

Tech details

Retention is pretty much the same as before, with 2 of Northwave’s proprietary SLW3 dials, a crossed lower lace layout for micro adjust of midfoot tension, and silicone heel grippers

  • easy-clean perforated PU synthetic leather upper
  • new Morph Carbon 13 injected carbon composite sole with Powershape arch support
  • 13/15 sole stiffness
  • 3-bolt Look-style & 4-bolt Speedplay (with optional insert) pedal compatibility
  • dual SLW3 dial lacing adjustment
  • standard Pro fit or Wide fit
  • 290g claimed weight (per shoe, size 42)

The completely renewed Northwave Revolution road cycling shoes promise a ‘pro’ look at a more affordable price with a bit of flex for better all-day comfort. The Revolutions sell for $250 / 225€ in four colors. We see all-white, all-black, and the light gray with sage green details here. But there also will be a pair with fluorescent red accents soon, as well.

All come in EU sizes 36-50 (and half sizes in the middle of the range), both in standard narrow Pro fit and a new Wide Fit option, too.

Northwave says they’ll be available in their web shop “soon”, as well as through regular dealers.

Camp and Go Slow just landed a big one. Known for their beloved bar tape that draws inspiration from colorful wildlife, their new Trout Tape is “inspired by the tough and elusive Brown Trout”. It’s made using the same processes and durable custom-dyed nylon yarn as the brand’s Eastern and Western Rattler tape.

The new Trout Tape is said to be softer and smoother than the Rattler tape. Inspired by the Brown Trout’s gorgeous colored scales, the colors should still look fantastic with your fave leather saddle.

Retail and What You Get

Retail: $44

(Photo / Sarah C&GS)

The new Trout Tape comes in two 3300mm long rolls for the widest bars. The rolls will be packaged in a high-quality mesh drawstring bag. This bag is great for other uses, like storing loose goodies to throw in a bigger bag.

(Photo / Sarah C&GS)

The Trout Tape, like the Rattler tape, is backed with the same 1.5mm of foam (the perfect amount, BTW) for just the right amount o’ cushioning. The bar tape is made in Taiwan and the bag is cut and sewn in Seattle.

What You Don’t Get…

No bar end plugs are included, (I suggest going with these, so add it to your cart). And no “finishing tape”, who uses it anyway?

Just like the Rattler Tape, the Trout Tape can be cleaned and doesn’t stretch much, making it completely reusable. It’s a great product from a great lil’ brand. Click the link below and get yours before it sells out. You won’t regret it.

Dandy Horse Launches Double Hook Rim Tech On Three Wheelsets for 2025 https://bikerumor.com/dandy-horse-double-hook-rim/ https://bikerumor.com/dandy-horse-double-hook-rim/#comments Fri, 01 Nov 2024 14:25:50 +0000 https://bikerumor.com/?p=371645 Are double hooked rims the future of bicycle rim design?

The post Dandy Horse Launches Double Hook Rim Tech On Three Wheelsets for 2025 appeared first on Bikerumor.

Dandy Horse Double Hook rims wheels with brick wall

Yes – you read that right, just after launching a hookless design, Dandy Horse is walking hookless back and implementing double hook rims for select 2025 models. Why you ask? Dandy Horse cites the same reasons as hookless; safety, less flats, and better ride quality. Is there any precedent or is this a whole new concept for better wheel performance? Read on and find out.

(All Images: Dandy Horse)

Who Is Dandy Horse?

Dandy Horse is a Polish wheel brand located in Warsaw. They are a boutique-ish style carbon wheel company that produces wheels for on and off-road riding. Their designs are focused on lightweight builds, with their own hubs and rim designs.

For 2025, Dandy Horse is upping the ante on gravel, road, and all-road riding (but curiously not MTB) with three new wheelsets. The new lineup includes the Hyperion 45 GRV, Hyperion 30, and Positron 30, all featuring a unique “Double Hook” rim design.

Did you just say double hook? Yes, Dandy Horse says the new double hook design will give riders maximum tire security and stability at any pressure. Here’s the lowdown on what a double-hook rim offers.

Dandy Horse Double Hook rims design

What is Double Hook Rim Technology?

Dandy Horse claims to be the only manufacturer currently offering carbon rims with this Double Hook design. The design integrates an outer hook to complement the traditional inner hook.

Why Double Hooked? Dandy Horse says the new tech will improve safety and durability, particularly when riding over rough terrain with low-pressure tires—a common scenario in gravel cycling.

Is anyone else doing this? Not exactly, but there are some brands with similar concepts. Both Zipp and ENVE have used rim profiles with extra wide rim edges that are meant to prevent pinch flats and rim damage. Both of these designs were hookless though, so it seems like Dandy Horse is combining that concept with a hooked internal to create a hooked rim that could be as durable as hookless.

Dandy Horse Double Hook rims front hubs

Is Dandy Horse on the edge of an industry breakthrough? Maybe, though, the fact that this new tech isn’t on their carbon mountain bike line is curious. We hope to get a set in for review and see for ourselves. Until then, we’ll have to take it at what it is: a cool-sounding design that could be a game changer or the result of smart marketing.

The Double Hook design is standard across all models in the 2025 Hyperion lineup.

Hyperion 45 GRV: High-Profile Power for Gravel

Leading the off-road charge is the Hyperion 45 GRV, Dandy Horse’s premier high-profile gravel wheelset. Sporting a 45mm rim height and 27mm internal width. This gravel-focused wheelset is crafted to merge speed with comfort. Designed for those who like to go fast without compromising on comfort, the Hyperion 45 GRV is one of the lighter high-profile gravel wheels on the market.

Hyperion 30: A New Take on a Fan-Favorite

The Hyperion 30 series, a long-time favorite for gravel and mountain bike riders, has been upgraded for 2025 with the introduction of hooked rims. The Hyperion 30 sports a 27mm internal width with Double Hook reinforcement, enhancing rim and tire protection. Dandy Horse says this update comes directly from rider feedback. Ensuring that the Hyperion 30 will stay secure even under the most demanding conditions on gravel and off-road riding.

  • Price: €1 259 – €1 619

Much of the same all-rounder Xelius SL3 looks are still here in the new more aero Xelius DRS, just taken to the next level which is no surprise. That lightweight carbon road race bike in 2022 was already almost as fast as Lapierre’s previous fully aerodynamic Aircode DRS aero road race bike.

The same 3D Tubular seat cluster design carries over, extending the length of the seatstays into the middle of the toptube, and decoupling the stays from the seattube. Together, since the stays don’t join the seat cluster, the D-shaped aero seattube and seatpost have more possibility to flex, filtering out vibration and increasing rider comfort.

Faster on the flats, faster on the climbs

But now the Xelius DRS bike is a claimed 15% faster in the wind.

2025 Lapierre Xelius DRS lightweight carbon all-rounder aero road race bike, 15% faster aerodynamics

That means a 14W savings at 50km/h – or 7 seconds saved every 10km. Or, still at more regular human speeds of 35km/h, a savings of 5W. And since it takes you longer going slower, 10 seconds saved over those same 10km!

Lapierre Xelius DRS lightweight carbon aero road bike, CFD

Lapierre says the aero optimization came down to more advanced CFD analysis, then wind tunnel testing, that helped them rework a few key areas on the new Xelius DRS, while maintaining the Xelius family’s signature lightweight and ride comfort. The engineering team focused on 6 core areas of the new bike (fork, headtube, downtube, seattube, seatstays, and 3D tubular seat cluster). They reshaped pretty much every tube to a thinner, deeper NACA or elliptical profile while tweaking carbon layups to prevent weight gain or uncomfortable stiffness where it wasn’t needed.

But the Xelius DRS is still a bit heavier than the Xelius SL, just +45g comparing the top-tier frames or +53g for the mid-level carbon frames. So, Lapierre did the complete bike math to see how far you still get the aero vs. weight gains. Apparently, for an elite-level rider (averaging 300W), the DRS will be faster up to a 10% slope. And for amateur roadies (~180W avg. power), the DRS is still faster up a 7.5% climb.

Vision SC 30 AGX Wheel both rims

Vision Wheels has slowly revamped its road offering over the past few years. The change has garnered wider tubeless ready rims, updated hubs, and overall versatility. With this change, the higher-end wheels received the update first, and then the tech slowly trickled down. The Vision SC (Service Course) 30 AGX wheelset is the latest on the receiving end of the tech updates. Vision didn’t change much from the higher-end SL version. However, they gave this wheelset its own path, with a deeper rear rim and gravel capability.

What is it? Vision SC 30 AGX Disc Wheelset

Vision’s newest low-profile carbon wheelset, the SC 30 AGX, offers nearly the same rim as the SL versions but at almost half the price. How? They swap out the PRS hub (reviewed here) for a less advanced (but solid) pawl-driven hub. If this sounds familiar, thats because it is. We reported on this at Sea Otter Classic, and the wheels even received a “best of” award

The Vision SC 30 AGX Disc wheelset is the latest addition to the Vision AGX (gravel and all-road capable) line. It is the first to employ two different rim depths on the same wheel.

Vision SC 30 AGX Wheel front and rear
Pardon the dust; these wheels have rarely come off my bike, only to swap tires.

The front of the SC 30 AGX is 30mm deep, and the rear is a slightly taller 35mm. Both use the same 24 straight pull spokes and lacing pattern. The internal rim width is modern and measures 22.55mm with a solid hooked bead wall.

I’m new to the updated graphics package of the newest Vision wheels. It’s classic but with a modern twist of overblowing the logo. It’s subtle enough that it doesn’t call out much and won’t throw off your bike motif.

Ride Review: Vision SC 30 AGX

I was very excited when the Vision SC 30 AGX came across my desk. I am a fan of Visions wheels, having raced their tubulars for years in cyclocross and deep-section wheels on the road.

Vision SC 30 AGX Wheel rear hub

Most riders know Vision wheels and components, but they mostly come from various World Tour teams and OEM products that arrive on their bikes. I feel Vision sometimes gets a bad wrap, and riders write them off as the “gear that comes stock” on the bike they purchased, not as the upgrade gear that riders look at for a performance boost and speed. The new Vision SC 30 AGX wheels prove you can have performance, reliability, and rational pricing in an all-around wheelset.

Vision SC 30 AGX Wheel front tire

So, are they gravel wheels? Good question, and the answer is… Sorta. The Vision SC 30 AGX fits that niche of all road and gravel that floats between categories. The rim width is enough to fill out a 40-45mm tire well without getting the lightbulb effect. The same applies to modern road tires; the SC 30 AGX works very well with a 26-30mm road tire. So, they have a progressive road feel and a slightly conservative modern gravel feel. For cyclocross and anything in the 33-40mm range, they are perfect (rim-wise).

On the All-Road

For the road and all road portion of my time on the SC 30 AGX, I opted for a thicker casing Teravail Telegraph 30mm tire. It’s a tire I wouldn’t flat on gravel exploration and one that rolls pretty well on the tarmac.

Vision SC 30 AGX Wheel with tire

My first impression of the SC 30 AGX wheels was, “These feel light.” When actually — they are not. At 1547g, they are closer to the weight of XC mountain bike wheels. However, the overall weight of the wheelset was in the hub. This is similar to my sensation when I recently reviewed the FSA KFX i28 MTB wheels.

The wheels feel nice and calm on the open road. They are only 30/35mm deep, so they don’t catch much wind. They do have a nice roll, slightly rounding out the rough spots and delivering a punch when needed on a steep climb.

Vision SC 30 AGX Wheel rim and tire

The size of the 30mm tire paired with the 30mm rim boosts confidence in cornering without feeling dull, like some wider rims.

Familiar Color Palette

Regarding aesthetics, the SC 30 AGX adheres to a familiar style guide that the top-tier Vision wheel follows. The graphics are subdued, pale grey, and pop slightly in the sun. The rims have a matte finish, with UD carbon and a slight rise in the middle.

Challenge Gravine Gravel Tire far

To Gravel and Beyond

Most, if not all, of my time on the SC 30 AGX was spent riding gravel and cyclocross. Light gravel is where the wheels shine. The amount of abuse and power washing (cyclocross is excellent for your equipment) is worth noting. I’ve flatted several times while on the SC 30 AGX wheels but have yet to see rim damage. I’ve often thought, “There goes the rim,” only to find a sliced tire and an unscathed rim.

Challenge Gravine Gravel Tire side

Some (most) flat tires occurred from experimenting with the lowest pressures I could get away with while training in our cyclocross course. The 30mm rim width allows for an excellent contact patch without lowering the pressure much to get the desired feel. Paired with the 30/35mm depth, the wheelset has some natural give that helps soften the roughest roads and grassy fields.

To me, the wheelset shines as a true all-arounder, allowing riders to roll from road to gravel as quickly as they can swap tires. The $1,298 price tag put the SC 30 AGX on the bubble of accessible performance carbon wheels.

Vision SC 30 AGX Wheel lock ring

Long Haul Hubs

The hubset on the SC 30 AGX is one piece that I both loved and have some gripes about. The bearings (six in total) are super trustworthy. After many washes, creek crossings, and mud baths — they came away rolling smooth. Plus, thanks to the hub construction, they are straightforward to service and access.

Where they fell short for me is engagement. Since I’ve ridden the Vision wheels with the new PRS hub many times, the engagement gulf between the PRS and the 3-pawl design on the SC 30 AGX is a bit much. It’s not bad, and those who don’t swap mountain bikes and road wheels often would have difficulty noting a difference. However, those who appreciate a high engagement hub will.

Is it enough to damage the wheels’ performance? No, but when you’re used to that instant engagement, it can feel like it is.

Lasting Impressions

The Vision SC 30 AGX is a massive step in the right direction. It’s fast-rolling and reasonably accessible to those who want an all-arounder upgrade. The graphics are slight enough that they would pair nicely with any bike.

The longevity of the bearings and rims during my testing makes me think the SC 30 AGX would be great for anyone who is hard on gear. They are still running as smooth as I remember from opening the package, with only superficial scratches on the rims.

Vision SC 30 AGX Wheel logo with sun

Would I change anything on the wheels? No, but I would love to see a higher-end version of the SC 30 AGX (SL30?) with the PRS hub. That would be a very popular gravel and cyclocross wheelset, especially now that tubeless cyclocross tires are performing at an all-time high. But one can dream.

  • Series 1 double butted CrMo Beyond Road frame; clearance for up to 45mm tires
  • Shimano Claris 2×8 drivetrain, 11-32t cassette
  • Tektro road mechanical disc brakes
  • WTB Exposure 700 x 36mm tires

Sidi teamed up with L’Eroica to create the Tenacia, a classic road biking shoe made with modern materials for fans of vintage cycling. A classy but low-maintenance synthetic construction for good looks in any conditions. A flat rubber sole that will stick to any style of flat pedals. And key reinforcements that mesh well with traditional metal toe clips & straps, and will keep the shoes looking good for years to come.

Sidi calls the shoes a smooth blend of tradition and innovation, so you can ride your retro bike in comfort and good looks…

The Sidi Tenacia shoes are inspired by the style of shoes road racers last wore in the 1970s.

Their name meaning tenacity in Italian, is a callout to the strength of will and determination it took to race the steel bikes of yesteryear in all weather conditions, over a mix of smooth tarmac and dusty white gravel roads, and all with skinny tires and huge gearing that we wouldn’t dare to ride today. Well, except for at L’Eroica. That’s when otherwise sane modern cyclists break out those vintage bikes and pedal that old-school tech over the beautiful white gravel roads and rolling hills that have made Sienna famous among road cyclists.

But while the Tenacia exude old-school cool style too, Sidi makes them with a modern synthetic upper for easy care and improved durability. Plus, they give the shoes a simple rubber sole that mimics leather sole looks, but delivers more versatile grip on- and off-the-bike.
